Play is our birthright

Here’s something that really resonated with me while watching a video from Global Voice Acting Academy featuring Carol Monda and David Rosenthal:

Voiceover is about being true, not being “right.” The only way to get to truth is through play. Play is the key!

The problem is, society pats us on the head when we get things “right.” And somewhere along the way, whether consciously or subconsciously, we become afraid to play.

Maybe the last time we truly played, someone told us, “Stop that! What are you doing? Grow up!” Maybe perfectionism stamped out our childlike abandon. Maybe we simply learned that getting things “right” was safer than risking getting things “wrong.”

So, instead, the only thing we play is safe.

It then becomes imperative—not because it’s forced upon us, but because it enriches us—to reclaim what is rightfully ours: play.
