A bad day salvaged might just be better than a good day
Without sounding too whiny, here’s some context:
I’ve been struggling vocally, especially in the weeks leading up to my reflux diagnosis and since. I don’t know if it was actually worse or if I became more aware of it. And then the diagnosis confirmed and amplified my hyper-awareness. Regardless, it’s not been great. My voice has felt thin, my range is smaller on both ends, and it’s been tough to get solid vocal work done. Maybe I’m focusing too much on my voice rather than the acting. But I’m trying to get my voice back in shape since I stopped performing opera.
Anyways, I was ready for today to be more of the same. I was ready to be frustrated that my voice felt weak. I was ready to throw my hands up because I’ve been doing all I could to help curb my reflux symptoms. I was ready to chow down on a pizza or something for lunch for some immediate comfort (disregarding the later discomfort…)
But I didn’t.
My voice felt pretty good after my vocal warmups (I got a new straw for SOVT exercises and this one really worked!) ((I can explain SOVT, if you don’t already know, another time)) I worked through all my scripts and practiced my character voices. And I felt good!
And I didn’t eat any pizza for lunch!
Honestly, I felt better about today than I would have an easy good day. Don’t get me wrong, throw as many of those my way as you can! But I feel like I proved something to myself today. Here’s to more!
